Tobacco Control Coordinator

Advocate for the control and sales of tobacco products to youth in the community, and mobilize groups to participate in tobacco counter marketing, as well as the Network activities.
Qualification: Bachelors Degree; some experience in community activities; bi-lingual speakers are encouraged to apply.

Soccer Summer Clinic for Under 12 & 14 years old.

Join Raising Hope Soccer teams located in your neighborhood.

Practice is two days a week for each team.

Place: Ascham Street Playfield

(Behind 7 Eleven/Bank of America, Charles St. Providence)

Time: 3:00 to 4:30 p.m.

Days: Tue. & Thur.

Program runs to end of Summer break.

It is evident in Providence communities that tobacco products are openly advertised at store fronts and displayed on countertops; since we know that youth are much more influenced by such advertising, it means they will be more likely to end of smoking. In our neighborhoods, with high rate of unemployment and large population of low income families, single cigarettes, “loosies”, are being sold. Price sensitive young people can more easily buy loosies, (despite the fact that they are illegal) and it’s a great way to get them hooked. Youth participants of RAPS workshops on counter marketing have expressed just how easy it is for a young person to purchase cigarette at local retail stores due to the lack of monitoring by store attendants to check IDs of people purchasing cigarettes.

We want to hear from you on how Big Tobacco companies are “hooking up” with your kids. Don’t stay quiet, we want to fight the battle with you!

The Great American Smokeout is a day smokers are encouraged to stop smoking for the day (24 hours). The day is celebrated on the third Thursday of November, a week before Thanksgiving. This year, the Great American Smokeout will be celebrated on Thursday, November 19, 2009. We encourage everyone to take some sort of action; whether you smoke or not. Smokers may take action to not smoke at least for the day, and non smokers could send out the message of “Thank You for Not Smoking” to known smokers.

Youth are daily exposed to tobacco use through open retail advertising, influence of family members, other adults and youth who smoke. We encourage young people to join other youth across the country to say “No” to smoking; and make a commitment not to smoke. We are giving away free gifts to young people who make the commitment not to smoke at this time.
